Local Lifestyle

As the city of Boulder continues to climb in popularity and pushes further out into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the foothills area is becoming more developed. With a variety of housing locations, this area has properties and houses nestled into beautiful valleys or enjoying stunning views from atop the mountainsides. Residents here have access to Boulder as well as a few other much smaller charming mountain towns.

Dining, Entertainment and Shopping

Located just 21 miles west of Boulder, the Eldora Ski Resort is a winter playground and the closest skiing to Boulder. Known locally as a great place to learn to ski due to some of its gentler slopes and a large amount of learners programming, Eldora also offers challenging slopes for the more experienced and adventurous skier.

For those looking to get away from the mad pace of modern life and experience simpler times, the Gold Hill Inn is a nostalgic oasis. Located ten miles outside of Boulder at the end of a beautiful ride through the mountains, this Inn and gourmet restaurant serves some of the finest food in the west.

Located almost two hours away from Boulder, Keystone is a smaller mountain town with its own bevy of shopping locations, dining experiences, and fun festivals. One such festival is Keystone’s Oktoberfest which is a fun time for the whole family. From the kinderfest with a slate of children-centered activities to tastings of Colorado brewed beers to the summer ending sales in Keystone’s stores and boutiques, this festival has something for everyone.

Things to Do

A mere 20 minutes away from Boulder is a map dot of a town called Nederland, which is home to one of the most unique and truly bizarre festivals in existence. Nederland’s Frozen Dead Guy Days is typically celebrated on the second weekend of March and includes a Polar Plunge for those brave enough to dunk themselves in freezing water, a coffin race, a dance, and snow sculpture contests. The festival started after a sensational news story outlined how a local resident had been keeping a relative cryogenically frozen in a shed on their property. The titular “frozen dead guy” is still housed near Nederland, with a local resident acting as caretaker to the still-frozen body.

Yet another charming mountain town near Boulder, Estes Park offers even more options for outdoor fun, shopping, and dining. One of the festivals that call this hamlet home is the Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival. The festival has shows and interactive experiences that celebrate Celtic music, culture, and dance, including a piping contest and parade.

If you want to get outside for some quiet time away from people, the Boulder foothills offer some of the best fly-fishing opportunities in the world. Experienced anglers can spend days pulling trout from many local rivers and streams. For the less-experienced, local companies offer private guides and personalized lessons to get down that peculiar flicking motion so essential to this pastime.
